The word fraction derives from the Latin term fractio, meaning “to break.” In mathematics, a fraction represents a numerical quantity that is not a whole integer, expressed as a ratio of two integers: the numerator (the dividend, signifying how many equal parts are taken) and the denominator(the divisor, signifying into how many total equal parts the whole is partitioned).
Fractions form the foundational backbone of precision engineering, culinary recipes, architectural blueprints, financial equity splits, and computer graphics algorithms. This master guide walks through the mathematical proofs of the four fundamental operations, details Least Common Denominator (LCD) algorithms, solves mixed number conversions, and provides high-speed mental math shortcuts.
Figure 1: Complete Operational Matrix for Fraction Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division Rules.
You cannot add fractions directly if their denominators differ because the “slices” are of different sizes. You must find the Least Common Multiple (LCM) of the denominators, scale both numerators accordingly, add the numerators together, and keep the common denominator unchanged.
Formula: a/b + c/d = (a·d + b·c) / (b·d)
Just like addition, subtraction requires identical denominators. Once converted to the common LCD, subtract the second numerator from the first while preserving the denominator.
Formula: a/b − c/d = (a·d − b·c) / (b·d)
Fraction multiplication is the simplest operation because no common denominator is required! Multiply the top numbers together to find the new numerator, and multiply the bottom numbers together to find the new denominator.
Formula: (a/b) × (c/d) = (a × c) / (b × d)
Dividing by a fraction is algebraically identical to multiplying by its reciprocal. Keep the first fraction, change the division sign to multiplication, and flip the second fraction upside down.
Formula: (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = (a/b) × (d/c) = (a·d) / (b·c)

Every rational fraction belongs to one of three categories based on the magnitude of the numerator relative to the denominator:
| Fraction Type | Definition | Value Relative to 1 | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proper Fraction | Numerator is strictly smaller than the denominator ($n < d$) | < 1 | 1/2, 3/4, 5/8, 9/10 |
| Improper Fraction | Numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator ($n \ge d$) | ≥ 1 | 5/4, 7/3, 16/5, 9/9 |
| Mixed Number | Combines a nonzero whole integer with a proper fraction | > 1 | 1 ¾, 2 ⅓, 4 ⅗ |
