An authoritative technical dissertation exploring the birth of modern quantum mechanics, the ultraviolet catastrophe, blackbody Stefan-Boltzmann scaling, and the photoelectric interaction of light with metals.
1. The Stefan-Boltzmann Law and Fourth-Power Thermal Radiation
Every physical body whose absolute thermodynamic temperature exceeds absolute zero (0 K) emits electromagnetic radiation across all wavelengths due to thermal oscillations of its internal charged particles. In 1879, Jožef Stefan experimentally determined—and in 1884 Ludwig Boltzmann theoretically derived from classical thermodynamics—that the total thermal power radiated per unit surface area of a blackbody is proportional to the fourth power of its absolute temperature:
j* = ε · σ · T⁴ [W/m²], P = ε · σ · A · T⁴ [Watts]
Where:
- σ is the Stefan-Boltzmann constant, precisely defined as σ = (2π⁵ k_B⁴) / (15 c² h³) ≈ 5.670374 × 10⁻⁸ W/(m²·K⁴).
- ε is the surface emissivity (1.0 for an ideal blackbody radiator; 0.98 for human skin; 0.02 for polished gold thermal reflectors).
- A is radiating surface area in m².
- T is absolute temperature in Kelvin.
Because radiation scales with the fourth power of temperature (T⁴), doubling absolute temperature (e.g., from 300 K to 600 K) multiplies radiated thermal power by a factor of 2⁴ = 16! In astronomical astrophysics, this fourth-power scaling underpins stellar luminosity calculations (L = 4πR² σ T_eff⁴).
2. Wien's Displacement Law and Stellar Spectral Classification
In 1893, Wilhelm Wien discovered that the peak wavelength (λ_max) of electromagnetic radiation emitted by a blackbody is inversely proportional to its thermodynamic temperature:
λ_max · T = b ≈ 2.897771955 × 10⁻³ m·K
Where b is Wien's displacement constant. As a body heats up, its dominant emission shifts toward progressively shorter, higher-energy wavelengths:
- Human Body (310 K): Peak emission occurs at λ_max ≈ 9.35 µm (deep thermal infrared, invisible to human eyes, captured by FLIR thermal imaging cameras).
- Incandescent Filament (3,000 K): Peak at λ_max ≈ 966 nm (near-infrared; only ~10% of emitted energy falls within the visible light band, explaining the low luminous efficacy of incandescent bulbs).
- The Sun (5,778 K): Peak at λ_max ≈ 501.5 nm (green-yellow visible light), directly matching the peak sensitivity of terrestrial biological photoreceptors.
- Hot O-Type Star (30,000 K): Peak at λ_max ≈ 96 nm (far ultraviolet), appearing dazzling blue-white to distant observers.
3. Planck's Radiation Law: The Birth of Quantum Physics
In the late 19th century, classical electrodynamics and statistical equipartition led Lord Rayleigh and Sir James Jeans to calculate the spectral radiance of a blackbody cavity as:
B_RJ(λ, T) = ( 2 · c · k_B · T ) / λ⁴
As wavelength λ approached zero (the ultraviolet regime), this classical formula predicted that spectral radiance would diverge to infinity, meaning that every warm object would instantly radiate infinite high-frequency energy. This catastrophic failure of classical physics was termed the ultraviolet catastrophe.
On December 14, 1900, Max Planck resolved the paradox by introducing the radical postulate that atomic wall resonators can only emit and absorb electromagnetic energy in discrete, quantized packets: E = n · h · f. This quantization yielded Planck's exact radiation law:
B_λ(λ, T) = [ ( 2 · h · c² ) / λ⁵ ] · [ 1 / ( e^( h·c / ( λ·k_B·T ) ) - 1 ) ]
At high frequencies (short λ), the exponential denominator grows exponentially, cleanly suppressing high-frequency emission and matching experimental blackbody spectra with 100% precision.
4. Einstein's Photoelectric Effect and Stopping Potential
In 1905, Albert Einstein extended Planck's hypothesis, proposing that light itself propagates not merely as continuous Maxwellian waves, but as localized packets of energy called photons, each carrying energy E = h·f.
When a photon strikes an electron bound within a metal cathode, the electron absorbs the entire photon energy in a single instantaneous quantum event. If this energy exceeds the electrostatic binding barrier known as the metal's work function (Φ), the electron escapes with kinetic energy:
K_max = h · f - Φ = ( h · c / λ ) - Φ
Crucially, increasing light intensity merely increases the number of incident photons (producing more emitted electrons and higher photocurrent), but has zero effect on individual electron kinetic energy. To measure K_max experimentally, a retarding negative voltage (the stopping potential V_0) is applied to the collector plate until the photocurrent drops identically to zero:
e · V_0 = K_max ⇒ V_0 = ( h / e ) · f - ( Φ / e )
Plotting stopping potential V_0 against frequency f yields a straight line whose slope is identically h/e (independent of the cathode metal), confirming Planck's constant and earning Einstein the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Frequently Asked Questions (Blackbody & Quantum Physics FAQ)
Why was the photoelectric effect impossible to explain with classical wave theory?
Classical wave theory predicted that electron ejection depends on wave intensity (electric field amplitude) and that dim light would take minutes or hours to accumulate sufficient energy. In reality, emission is instantaneous if frequency exceeds threshold (f > f_0), and dim high-frequency light ejects electrons immediately while intense red light causes zero emission.
Why does thermal radiation follow a fourth-power temperature law (T⁴)?
Integrating Planck's spectral distribution over all frequencies from zero to infinity yields the total energy density u = a·T⁴. Applying thermodynamics to the photon gas pressure P = u/3 confirms that blackbody flux is proportional to the fourth power of temperature (j* = σ·T⁴).
How do astronomers determine a star’s temperature from its color?
By measuring a star's peak emission wavelength (λ_max) using optical spectrometers, astronomers apply Wien's Displacement Law (T = b / λ_max). For instance, our Sun emits most intensely around 501 nm, indicating a surface photosphere temperature of T ≈ 2.898 × 10⁻³ / (501 × 10⁻⁹) ≈ 5,780 K.
What is the significance of the stopping potential (V₀)?
Stopping potential V₀ directly measures the maximum kinetic energy of the fastest emitted photoelectrons: K_max = e·V₀. Because elementary electron charge e is known, measuring V₀ provides a direct experimental measurement of Planck's constant h and the cathode work function Φ.
